So what do we mean by unique lighting? Through all our years of trading, we’ve taken care to preserve the ingenious structural design devised by George Carwardine in 1932, which was inspired by the anatomy of the human arm. Carwardine wanted a lamp which could be manoeuvred into precise positions and angles with the utmost simplicity, and he used the configuration of the human radius, ulna and humerus bones, biceps and triceps muscles and the rotation of the human hand to guide his classic design of three metal arms, hinged at an elbow and held in position by three precisely opposed springs. This structure, along with a fully rotating shade (the equivalent of the hand) has remained in place to the present day, and ensures a virtually limitless range of movement and direction for all our lamps.

But thanks to continued input from leading designers Kenneth Grange and Margaret Howell, we’ve constantly added contemporary twists to the classic design, without ever compromising on the functionality. Many of our unique table lamps now double as wall lamps or floor standing lamps, for instance – you simply swap the traditional table base for a wall mounting or a floor pole. Our graceful Type 1228 has a beautiful transparent shade in place of the traditional metal canopy, and the gleaming chrome plated Type 3 has a double skinned shade, subtly curved but still unmistakeably Anglepoise, which – like all of our products – fuses futuristic panache with retro elegance.
